Vuzix - we'll release our first microLED smart glasses in 2021

Vuzix announced that it is developing its next-generation Smart Glasses, that will be powered by microLED microdisplays and other advanced technologies. The first such glasses are expected to become available in 2021.

Vuzix is developing a wide range of devices, ranging from "reasonably priced consumer-facing product" to a higher end enterprise version with built-in cellular connectivity. Vuzix says that the new advanced waveguide optics and binocular displays will enable a larger field of view and an enhanced user experience. Vuzix is developing solutions based on both monochrome and full-color microLEDs.

AUO shows its automotive and flexible microLED displays at SID Displayweek 2020

AU Optronics released this nice video that shows its latest microLED display prototypes. First up is the company's 12.1" automotive display. This one features a 1920x720 (169 PPI) resolution, and is made on an LTPS backplane. This display was shown first in 2018.

The second display in the video is the flexible microLED developed in collaboration with PlayNitride. This is a 9.4" 228 PPI display, again driven by an LTPS backplane.

RiT Display shows a microLED wearable display prototype

In December 2019 Taiwan-based PMOLED display maker RiTDisplay announced that it plans to launch its first MicroLED displays in 2020. Last week during SID Displayweek 2020 the company demonstrated its first prototype, as can be seen in the video below.

The company did not reveal any technical specifications or discuss any commercialization plans.

PlayNitride launches new displays at SID 2020

PlayNitride introduced several new display technologies at SID DisplayWeek 2020. First up we have the PixeLED Matrix, which is a tiled microLED display module based display, each produced on its own PCB.

Each PixeLED module is made from 16 pixels (4X4), and can reach pitches of 0.3-0.4 mm. PlayNitride says that this technology can compete with mini LED displays, and says that it achieves a superior contrast and can also be fitted on curved surfaces. PixeLED displays can be used for TV displays, for commercial signage displays and also for automotive lighting. The display can currently achieve a maximum brightness of 2,000 nits.

GE shows it is possible to inkjet print its red phosphor on plastic substrates

GE announced that it has been able to deposit its red phosphor (PFS-KSF) material using an inkjet printing process on a plastic substrate. This technology can be applied in future microLED and miniLED displays.

GE is also sampling a new green phosphor, that together with the red phosphor can attain 88% Rec. 2020. The company reveals that almost 40 billion LEDs with its PFS-KSF material were sold into commercial displays.

eLux's fluidic microLED technology and business explained

USA-based eLux was established in 2016 as a spin-off from Sharp Labs of America, to commercialize a unique MicroLED production technology. The company was in stealth mode for a few years, and is now finally discussing its technology and business. We talked to the company's president and CEO Jong-Jan Lee, who explains the company's technology, status and plans.

eLux's technology is based on a unique approach that moves microLEDs from wafer to the target substrate without the need of a pick-and-place process. The so-called fluidic process uses microLEDs dispersed in liquid and wells built onto the substrate. The microLED dispersion is spread over the substrate and the LEDs simply fall into place - a sort of self-assembly process, which can be seen in the video above.

Rohinni demonstrates its latest MicroLED prototypes at CES 2020

Rohinni demonstrated its latest technology and prototypes at CES 2020, and this interesting video shows the company's booth and provides an interview with the company's CEO.

On display you can see some flexible lighting prototypes, an LCD display backlighting unit that uses mini LEDs, automotive solutions developed by the Rohinni and Magma JV, keyboard backlights from its Luumii JV and finally some microLED display prototypes made by the BOE Pixey JV.

Here is Glo and Kyocera's 1.8" microLED prototype

In June 2019 Micro-LED developer Glo announced a partnership with Japan-based display maker Kyocera to demonstrate a 1.8" Micro-LED display. Here's Kyocera's booth at CEATEC 2019 that features this display (03:00):

The Glo microLED display features a resolution of 256x256 (200 PPI), a peak luminance of 3,000 nits and a color gamut of 81% Rec.2020. The display's frame rate is 240Hz and the response time is 7 usec or less. For this demonstration panel, Kyocera provided the LTPS backplane and driving technology while glo provided its InGaN RGB micro-LEDs and its transfer technology.
