An interview with Justin Brown - X Display's Executive Vice President Operations & Equipment

Justin Brown is X Display's Executive Vice President for Operations & Equipment. Justin leads the company’s supply chain development, manufacturing partner relationships and also its Equipment division, which provides mass-transfer equipment for XDC’s partners and licensees. Justin was kind enough to answer a few questions we had for XDC.

Q: Hello Justin, thanks for your time. XDC has been a bit quiet in the last few years. Can you bring us up to date on your microLED technologies, processes and products?

Thank you for the opportunity to share the progress at XDC. We have been busier in the near past than ever before. As you know, we first announced our MicroIC technology, our mass transfer process, our manufacturing equipment and the uniqueness of our approach, the IP strength we possess and the experience of the team. This led to broad customer visibility and we narrowed down our efforts to a select set of partners that we are currently working with. We have deep engagements with customers that we anticipate will result in end product announcements in the future.

Displayweek 2024 - microLED summary

The display industry's top conference, SID DisplayWeek 2024, took place two weeks ago in San Jose, California. This was an interesting event, and fruitful, and a good chance to see almost the entire industry in the same location. While LCDs and OLEDs dominate the current market, it seems as if most companies still believe microLEDs are the most promising next-generation display technology, and we saw many new prototypes and demonstrations. QD-EL displays seem to be progressing as well. Here's a list of all our articles from SID:

We hope this coverage will be useful. We shared several videos from the event - you can view them all here

MicroLED-Info's custom private seminars, elevate your microLED industry knowledge

MicroLED-Info offers custom-tailored seminars for companies interested in deepening their team's understanding of various MicroLED-related topics, training new personnel, assessing the relevance of a certain field for their company or simply honing their employees' MicroLED skills.

These seminars are built specifically according to the customer's needs and requests and take place online. Employees from around the world can join the meeting to learn, ask questions and discuss issues which are relevant to their interests. Such seminars have already had great success among past customers. Here's what a recent company, a world-leading materials and components manufacturer, had to say about the service:

"We recently had the pleasure of engaging with MicroLED-info for a professional training session on MicroLED technology. Their private seminar was not only detailed and knowledgeable but also incredibly insightful, providing us with a comprehensive overview of the technology and its marketplace. The depth of information extended to the supply chain, enabling our team to swiftly grasp the critical aspects necessary for strategic decision-making.

First impressions from SID Displayweek 2024

The display industry's premier event, Displayweek, is over. We will now collect our notes, thoughts, photos and images and will share it all in the coming days. In the meantime, we'd like to detail some initial impressions.

Generally speaking, it seems as if the display industry is going through a phase of relatively little innovation, especially with the mature LCD and OLED industry segments. While it has been a very busy week, and attendance at the event seems high, the number of actual demonstrations and prototypes was not stellar and compared to previous years, the booths were smaller and some companies skipped the event this year or preferred to only show their latest displays in private settings. Some thoughts we have:

Perovskites: Illuminating the Path for Next-Gen MicroLED Displays

Perovskites are a family of materials with the same basic structure that can have an impressive array of interesting properties, including unique optical properties. Metal halide perovskites offer several advantages for use as components of LEDs and displays. They are direct-bandgap semiconductor materials that possess high photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) reaching 100%, they have narrow and symmetric PL peaks (full width at half-maximum about 15–30 nm, which is even better than for the traditional QDs) that enables wide color gamuts and they can easily be synthesized and processed at room temperature, or vapor-processed at low temperatures (typically <180°C) using inexpensive precursors.

An example of a perovskite structure

Perovskite materials can benefit the MicroLED industry in two ways: as materials for color conversion (using perovskite-based QDs) and in perovskite-based LED emitters. Much R&D work is taking place on both these fronts, and interest seems to be growing.
