Historic companies

mLED

mLED logomLED Ltd was established in 2010 in Scotland as a spin-off from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, with funding led by the Braveheart Investment Group.

mLED was developing micro-LED displays with a focus on wearable devices and heads-up displays (HUDs), using a production platform based on printing and lithography. The company is no longer in business.

Optovate

Optovate logoEstablished in 2008 and based in the UK, Optovate developed GaN-based micro-LED technologies.

Optovate developed a scalable and cost-effective micro-LED transfer technique and it has also developed a way to produce and integrate a precision micro-catadioptric optical array that combines refraction and reflection of light from each of the micro-LEDs.

In 2019 the company was sold to Rain Technology.

Rapt Touch

RAPT Touch logoIreland-based Rapt Touch (RAPT) is a provider of optical multi-touch systems for display makers and systems integrators. RAPT developed a unique and patented optical touch technology that is fully compatible with microLED displays, at all sizes.

RAPT's FTIR technology is based on low-cost LEDs that create an optical mesh of infrared light signals, read by photodetectors. The LEDs and the photodetectors are placed on the edge of the display. The performance is not affected by capacitive coupling or display pattern noise, and can be used on any screen size.

RAPT's solution offers superb optical and touch performance and is highly compatible with OLED and microLED displays. The technology is cost effective as it is based on off-the-shelf components and its costs grow linearly with size (unlike other touch solutions).

RAPT Touch is a privately held company, with over 90 issued patents. RAPT’s products have already been deployed in several projects and systems, including Google’s 55” Jamboard, and HiteVision products.

Rohinni

Rohinni logoUS-based Rohinni, established in 2013, focused on miniLED and microLED technologies for lighting and displays.

Rohinni has developed precise placement technology that can achieve speeds greater than 100Hz for mini LEDs. The company has achieved mass product production volumes with the keyboard and logo backlighting joint venture, Luumii. In addition to this market, Rohinni's technology has been adopted in the display, automotive and consumer electronics markets.

In August 2018 Rohinni announced a JV with Magna Electronics to bring mini-LED and micro-LED lighting devices to the automotive market. In 2019 Rohinni announced a new joint venture with China-based display maker BOE to develop LCD mini-LED and micro-LED backlighting units. The JV with BOE is called BOE Pixey.

In early 2024, the company filed for bankruptcy and has ceased operations.

Seren Photonics

Seren Photonics logoUK-based Seren Photonics was a manufacturer of semipolar and nonpolar Gallium Nitride templates.

For the Micro-LED market, Seren developed a suite of long wavelength LED epitaxy on its novel semipolar GaN aimed at delivering higher efficiency and more color stable green, yellow and red devices. Seren said that its semipolar enabled LEDs overcome shortcomings of green LEDs manufactured on polar GaN, mainly low wall plug efficiency and poor wavelength stability over a range of current densities.

The company seems no longer to be in business.
