LG Display demonstrates a new microLED stretchable display that can stretch up to 50%

LG Display demonstrated a new stretchable microLED display, that can expand up to 50% of its size. LGD says that this is the world's first stretchable display that can do so.

The display is 12" in size, and can stretch up to 18-inch. It offers 100 PPI (probably at its relaxed state), and is made from 40 micron microLED chips.

In 2022, LGD unveiled its first stretchable microLED display, that was also a 12" 100 PPI display, made from 40 micron chips. But the 2022 display could stretch only 20%. LG Display managed to more than double the maximum elongation rate.  The company says it developed several new technologies in order to achieve the higher stretchability, including an improved special silicon substrate material (similar to a material used to make contact lenses) and developing a new wiring design structure.

LGD says that this higher stretchability will open up new application for such displays, but it is too early for commercialization. LGD's display have been tested for durability and can be stretched over 10,000 times, and maintain a high quality image even in extreme environments such as exposure to low or high temperatures and external shocks.

This stretchable display is the result of a large-scale national R&D project that LGD was selected to lead by South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) back in 2020. The project included 19 Korean companies and research institutes.
