Oppo announces the Air Glass monocle AR device

Oppo announced a new "limited release" product, called the Air Glass, which is a monocle AR (or "assisted reality" as the company calls it). The device projects a 2D image for one of your eyes, and it can be attached to conventional glasses via the magnetic frame.

The Air Glass is based on a monochrome green microLED microdisplay. We do not know much, Oppo only details that it can reach up to 3 million nits (but practically it will average 1,400 nits). The device itself has a Snapdragon 4100 chipset, a 3-hours battery life (active mode) and weighs a total of 30 grams.

LG details its direct-view miniLED and microLED TV range

In September 2020 LG launched its MAGNIT MicroLED TV range. The company did not give many details about potential prices and size options, until now.

So LG's MAGNIT TVs now sit within LG's DVLED Home Cinema Displays. DVLEDs are available in sizes ranging from 108-inch HD (2K) resolution to 325-inch 8K settings. The pixel-pitch of LG's TVs is either 0.9 mm, 1.2 mm, 1.5 mm and 2.2 mm. This gives LG's customers a wide range of sizes and resolutions, as can be seen below.

Xiaomi announces its first smart glasses with a 0.13-inch MicroLED microdisplay

Xiaomi announced its first smart glasses, called unimaginatively the Xiaomi Smart Glasses. These light-weight (51 grams) glasses will offer a monochrome (green) display and speakers, microphones and a 5MP camera, and will connect to your smartphone for notifications, navigation and will have applications such as real-time translation. It will support Xiaomi's XiaoAI Virtual Assistant.

Xiaomi says the microLED display is 0.13-inch in size, with a peak brightness of 2-million nits. The pixel pitch is 4 um. While not official, this is highly likely to be JBD's 0.13" VGA microLED display panel, revealed last year.

Quantum Dots producer Nanosys acquires microLED display developer glo

Quantum Dots developer Nanosys announced that it acquired 3D Nanowire microLED display developer Glo. The financial details were not disclosed.

Glo has been developing GaN microLED displays on both LTPS and CMOS (microdisplay) backplane. The company, founded in 2003, has invested (according to Nanosys) over $200 million in its technology - which includes epitaxial LED growth, transfer technology and chip processing.

AU Optronics shows its microLED display prototypes at SID Displayweek 2021

AUO Optronics is showing its latest microLED ALED display prototypes at SID DisplayWeek 2021. Most of these aren't new display (AUO already demonstrated these last month) but it's the first time we got these on video:

You can see the 1.39" 472x472 (338 PPI) full-circle microLED display, developed together with PlayNitride. You can also see AUO's 12.1-inch 169PPI microLED display it first demonstrated in SID 2020, and the 9.4-inch 228 PPI flexible microLED prototype it also developed together with PlayNitride.

LG showcases its MAGNIT MicroLED TV at CES 2021

In September 2020 LG launched its MAGNIT MicroLED TV. The company is now showcasing its next-generation TV technology at virtual CES 2021:

The MAGNIT TVs are made from 160x180 modules, arranged in 8-unit Cabinets (640x360 each). The MAGNIT offers a brightness of 600 nits (peak 1,200 nits) and feature LG's AI solution (based on its a7 image processor). LG says it uses a new advanced black coating technology that maximizes black levels and increase resistance to dust, humidly and finger marks. A 4K MAGNIT configuration is 163" in size.

Kopin and JBD to develop monochrome 2K microLED microdisplays

US-based Microdisplay developer Kopin announced an agreement with Jade Bird Display (JBD) to develop superbright monochrome microLED microdisplays. Kopin says that LED technology has the potential to enable super-high brightness and low power consumption displays.

Under this new agreement, JBD will provide LED wafers and hybrid bonding service to Kopin who will used its own silicon backplanes to produce monochrome 2kx2k 1" microdisplays.

JBD will start selling its 0.13" VGA monochrome microLED microdisplays next month

In May 2020, China-based MicroLED microdisplay developer Jade Bird Display announced a new 0.13" VGA microdisplay - which it says is the world's smallest microdisplay. JBD today announced that next month it will stat selling these displays.

The JBD4UM480P microLED display is a monochrome 640x480 0.13-inch display, that offers a brightness of 2 million nits (green), 200,000 nits (red) or 150,000 nits (blue), with a power consumption of a few hundred milliwatts under average operation conditions.

LG officially launches its MAGNIT microLED signage TV

In July 2020 we reported that LG Electronics will soon launch its first microLED TV. Today LG Electronics indeed announced its MAGNIT TV product (name apparently derived from magnificent and nit).
