AUO launches commercial wearable microLED displays, to show new microLED prototypes and technologies

AU Optronics released some very interesting information as the company gets ready to showcase its latest microLED displays and technologies at Touch Taiwan 2023.

So first of all, AUO announced that it has finalized the development of its wearable microLED display, and the company is now launching the 1.39" round smartwatch display commercially. AUO demonstrated the wearable microLED display back in 2021 - a 1.39-inch 472x472 full-circle panel, that was developed together with PlayNitride. It's not clear when AUO actually plans to start selling this display to its customers, and what will be its production capacity.

Spotlight on eLux: a Microled Industry Association member

We're happy to interview eLux, as part of our new series of interviews with MicroLED Industry Association members. eLux was established in 2016 in the USA as a spin-out from Sharp Labs of America. eLux expertise and intellectual property development focus on the massively parallel assembly processes that enable low cost manufacturing of microLED displays.

Q: Hello! Can you introduce your company and technology?

eLux, Inc. was founded in 2016 as a spin-out from Sharp Laboratories of America. eLux's objective is to develop direct emission displays based on microLED technology targeting large format displays for video wall and television applications. Core personnel of eLux, including Jong-Jan Lee (President and CEO) and Paul Schuele (CTO), had extensive experience in display development working at Sharp Labs.

The work done at company headquarters in Vancouver, Washington consists of development of fundamental microLED assembly technology and characterization of display performance and reliability. Direct emission display development involves extensive collaboration with microLED suppliers and manufacturers of display backplanes, so significant effort is involved in prototype fabrication, which takes place in Taiwan.

Danvas announced a microLED luxury digital art canvas

Luxury display maker Danvas announced its premier Series G display, for digital art collectors. The company says that the microLED display will "accelerate the world’s appreciation of digital artists and their work by validating artwork ownership through a signature NFT authentication indicator and by allowing a buyer’s entire collection to be displayed in a truly exceptional next-generation display".

The Series G, designed by the Ammunition Group, is based on a microLED display that can be deployed in a square (4x4 feet) or portrait or landscape formats (3x4 feet). We do now have any more information on the display, and if it is indeed a microLED display, which if so it is likely to be tiled.

Tianma to build a $164 million full-process pilot microLED production line in Xiamen

Tianma announced plans to establish a 1.1 billion Yuan ($164 million USD) full-process microLED pilot line, in Xiamen. This line will be built by a joint venture between Tianma display, Xiangtou Group and Torch Investment.

In 2021 Tianma held its first "2021 Micro-LED Ecosystem Alliance Conference" in Xiamen, During the conference, the company unveiled several microLED prototype displays, including a 9.38" 960x480 transparent LTPS panel, a 7.56" 720x480 flexible LTPS panel, a 11.6" 2470x960 rigid LTPS display and a tiled microLED display, made from 5.04" 480x320 panels.

Samsung starts selling its 110-inch microLED TV in China, and already sold out the first batch

Samsung launched its 110-inch microLED TV back in 2021, with a price tag of around $150,000. Earlier this week Samsung started to offer it in China for 1.05 million Yuan, online at JD.com, and today it is reported that the company sold out its first batch of TVs.

It is not clear how many units did Samsung actually ship - and the web site still accepts reservations.

Innolux unveils a 12.3" tiled microLED display module prototype

Taiwan-based display maker Innolux demonstrated a 12.3" microLED tiled seamless display module prototype, based on an LTPS backplane. The display achieves a brightness of 700 nits and a resolution of 480x180 (40 PPI)

The display is driven by an active matrix backplane, and uses inkjet-printed quantum dots based color conversion system (which we do not have any more info for, as of now). The LEDs themselves are 20x40 um in size.

Visionox developed wearable and tiled microLED display samples

In December 2021, Visionox announced that it finished the construction of its MicroLED pilot line, which is the first full-process line built in China. The pilot line can produce complete displays, from driver backplane, through transfer process to full module production. The LED chips themselves are produced by a third party.

During Visionox's 2022 Technology Innovation Launch Event, the company announced that it has successfully built 1.84" wearable microLED display samples, in addition to glass-based 12.7" tiled display modules. Visionox did not reveal any more details about these new display samples.
