DSCC: microLED microdisplay shipments will remain low even in 2026

DSCC says that the AR and VR markets are set for quick growth, and display sales for AR and VR devices will grow at a CAGR of 52% between 2020 and 2026, to reach $4.2 billion in sales (up from $347 million in 2020). This forecast does not include military applications.

AR and VR display technology market share forecast (2022-2026, DSCC)

The main bulk of the market will remain displays for VR, as actual see-through AR will remain a relatively small market even in 2026. DSCC see microLED technologies providing a breakthrough in this market, but actual microLED display shipments will remain low, around 5%. The market will be dominated by OLED microdisplays.

STRATACACHE to build the first MicroLED production line in the US, mass production expected by 2023

Global digital signage solution provider STRATACACHE is embarking on a project to construct a microLED display production line in Eugene, Oregon. The company aims to start production in this fab at around 2022-2023, with plans to adopt these microLED displays in its own solutions.

The new factory (E4) will be a complete microLED production line, from epiwafer (on 300 mm silicon wafers), through transfer process and to final module assembly. The company plans to produce a wide range of displays, from tablet-sized panels to large-area displays. Some of these displays will be flexible and transparent as the company sees a market demand for such technologies. The yearly capacity of the E4 is expected to start at a 1 million square meters per year.

DSCC: MicroLED TV revenues to grow to over $220 million by 2026, high production costs to limit adoption

DSCC says that the microLED TV is going to grow quite fast in the next few years, from around $25 million in 2020 to $228 million by 2026:

MicroLED TV revenue forecast (2020-2026, DSCC)

While this sounds impressive, it means that according to DSCC MicroLED technology penetration will remain very small into the TV market (which is estimated at over $200 billion in 2020) - around 0.1% in 2026. Just for comparison, six years after being commercialized, in 2019 OLED TV revenues were estimated at $2.5 billion. The high retail price of microLED TVs will hinder faster growth.

Yole: micro-IC based microLED production could lead to large disruptions in the display industry

Display market analysts from Yole Developpement posted an interesting article, that speculates that Apple and Huawei are looking into microLED displays based on Si-CMOS micro-ICs. This model could have tremendous implications for the display market.

Display market disruption by microIC microLED displays (Yole)

The idea is that the device maker (Apple is likely to be the first to go down that route) will source micro LEDs from LED producers (or produce these in-house) and source microICs from foundries. Apple could then assemble these into its own displays, in-house. This means that in this model there's no room for traditional display makers which could lead to large disruptions in the display market, according to Yole.

Yole sees impressive growth for OLED and MicroLED microdisplays in the near future

Yole Développement (Yole) says that the microdisplay market is set for impressive growth in the next few years. By 2025, the total market will reach $4.2 billion in revenues (CAGR from 2020 to 2025 at 100%), while microdisplays for AR headsets will generate $1.8 billion.

This optimistic forecast has a warning though - it all depends whether next-generation display technologies will deliver on their promises - and whether actual use-cases will be found and commercialized.
