TU Braunschweig researchers, in collaboration with OUAS and ams-OSRAM are looking into using microLEDs for AI computing

Researchers at the Nitride Technology Centre (NTC) at TU Braunschweig, in collaboration with Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences and ams OSRAM, are looking into the use of microLED devices in neuromorphic computing. The researchers say that the adoption of microLED devices may lead to highly efficiency AI computers.

The basic idea is to mimic the biological neural network by using photonic components. The researchers are combining GaN components with conventional silicon microelectronics to create highly integrated arrays with hundreds of thousands of micro-LED. Using microLEDs can enable a power reduction by a factor of 10,000 compared to current technologies.

AUO and Smartkem to co-develop rollable transparent microLED displays

UK-based OTFT developer Smartkem announced that it has partnered with AUO to jointly develop rollable transparent microLED displays, based on Smartkem's OTFT backplane technology. The project will be based on a novel OTFT production process developed at ITRI.

Smartkem believes its technology will not only enable high-end rollable transparent microLED displays, but it will also enable drastic cost reduction that will bring costs down to mass market prices. Smartkem's low-temperature processing enables the use of low-cost and flexible plastic substrates rather than glass, which the company says will be a decisive factor in bringing production costs down.

Tianma shares details on its microLED production process, developed a new side wiring deposition technology to reduce costs

Tianma Microelectronics announced that it has developed a new side wiring technology that enables completely seamless tiled microLED displays. The new technology is based on a new process that is much more cost effective compared to other processes, in fact Tianma says it can reduce the cost of side wiring deposition by up to three times.

Tianma shared some details about its first tiled microLED displays. These offer a very small pixel pitch of 0.4 mm, and are based on an LTPS backplane. Tianma also revealed that it is using a laser-bsaed transfer process. The company is now running trial production, and it hopes to improve the yields and production efficiency in 2025, and then move to small batch mass production.

Researchers from Kookmin University developed new GaN submicron Fin-LEDs, and a face-selective dielectrophoretic assembly process

Researchers from Korea's Kookmin University have developed a new GaN-based fin-LED chip material and pixel process technology, saying that this innovation may be the key to overcome the limitations of current microLED technologies.

The researchers developed a viable pixel manufacturing process that vertically assembles sub-micron-sized fin-LEDs using a face-selective dielectrophoresis (DEP) assembly method. The GaN-based sub-micron-sized fin-LEDs are designed to maximize performance while minimizing costs related to the chips and pixelation process. This technology significantly enhances extraction light efficiency by vertically aligning the fin-LEDs, and it enables the implementation of chip materials and pixel manufacturing processes that significantly reduce production costs.
